Afghan Activist Zarqa Yaftali Wins Zayed Prize for Championing Girls’ Education Amid Bans

An Emirati foundation has awarded the prestigious Zayed Humanitarian Solidarity Prize to Afghan activist Zarqa Yaftali. The award recognizes her innovative efforts to support education for girls in Afghanistan, where over 2.2 million girls remain barred from secondary schools under Taliban rule.

The foundation honored Zarqa Yaftali for her tireless dedication to providing educational resources, establishing dozens of schools, and advocating for laws that protect women, children, and families. Her recognition highlights the critical role civil society plays in sustaining education despite systemic challenges.

The Education Crisis

Since the Taliban’s return to power, a ban on secondary education for girls has left over 2.2 million female students without formal schooling this year. Reports from UNICEF and UNESCO indicate a broader crisis, with four million children across Afghanistan currently out of school. Poor-quality teaching and severe economic hardships are also forcing many children into labor instead of classrooms.

Alternative Solutions and Hope

Despite international pressure, schools for girls remain closed. In response, activists like Yaftali have pivoted to offering alternative learning solutions, including underground and online education programs. Yaftali stated that receiving the award sends a powerful message of hope to Afghan girls, particularly those striving to access education through digital platforms.

About the Prize The Zayed Humanitarian Solidarity Prize has recognized 19 individuals since 2019 for their contributions to peace, coexistence, and humanitarian work, including global leaders in conflict resolution.
