High-Altitude Feat: Alex Honnold Free-Solos Taipei 101 Skyscraper
Renowned American climber Alex Honnold made history on Sunday by completing a ropeless "free-solo" ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper, stunning onlookers in the Taiwanese capital.

On January 25, 2026, Alex Honnold, famous for his historic ascent of El Capitan, conquered the 508-meter (1,667-foot) Taipei 101 tower in approximately 90 minutes.
Climbing without any safety ropes or protective gear, Honnold scaled the spire of what was once the world’s tallest building as crowds gathered below in awe. Despite high winds at the upper levels, he reached the top successfully, waving to spectators and describing the view as “incredible.”
While other climbers have scaled Taipei 101 in the past with permission and ropes, Honnold is the first to do so entirely free-solo.
The event has reignited debates regarding the ethics of high-risk stunts performed on live broadcasts, but fans worldwide have lauded the feat as a testament to human endurance and focus. Honnold’s climb was timed to coincide with a major international sports festival in Taipei, highlighting the city’s status as a hub for extreme adventure.
