Iran Protests Day 21: Supreme Leader Admits to ‘Thousands’ Dead as Confirmed Toll Surpasses 3,300

On the twenty-first day of nationwide protests in Iran, despite a continued internet blackout exceeding 200 hours and severe security pressure, confirmed statistics indicate the death toll has reached 3,308. In a significant development, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei acknowledged for the first time that "several thousand" people have been killed during the unrest.

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the twenty-first day of protests in Iran has been marked by a deepening human rights crisis. While the near-total internet shutdown hinders information flow, independent documentation efforts have intensified.

Supreme Leader’s Admission and Government Stance For the first time since the unrest began, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei admitted to the death of “several thousand” people. He labeled both protesters and their alleged foreign supporters as “criminals,” threatening a crackdown on what he termed “domestic and international seditionists.”

Concurrently, the Tehran Prosecutor denied rumors regarding the cancellation of execution orders for protesters, stating that the judiciary’s response would be “decisive, swift, and deterrent.” He confirmed that a large number of cases have resulted in indictments and have been sent to court. Police officials also reported mass arrests, including over 1,500 individuals in Gilan province alone.

Casualty and Arrest Statistics Despite the information blockade, HRANA has verified the following statistics up to the end of the 21st day:

  • Confirmed Deaths: 3,308 (including 3,097 protesters, 22 children, 166 military/government forces, and 23 non-protesting civilians).

  • Deaths Under Investigation: 4,382.

  • Severely Injured: 2,107.

  • Arrests: At least 24,266 individuals.

Internet Blackout and Communication Crisis The nationwide internet blackout, which began on the evening of January 8 (Dey 18), has surpassed 200 hours. While brief, limited connectivity has been reported in some areas, global internet access remains almost entirely cut off. This has severely hampered the ability of families to locate loved ones and for rights groups to verify atrocities. State media reported the activation of a “National Internet” to control communications.

International Reactions The international community has escalated its response. The US President stated, “The time has come to seek new leadership in Iran,” holding the Islamic Republic responsible for the country’s devastation. Meanwhile, Argentina designated the IRGC Quds Force as a terrorist organization, and the European Parliament President confirmed ongoing efforts to list the IRGC as a terrorist group.
