UN Human Rights Expert Concerned About Wave of Arrests of Women in Kabul

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, has expressed concern about the wave of arrests of women and girls in Kabul by the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Kokcha News Agency – Bennett warned that the new wave of arrests of women and girls in Kabul for allegedly not complying with strict dress codes is reminiscent of the restrictions in early 2024.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights emphasized that this time, reports indicate greater violence in these arrests.

According to him, these actions are part of the Taliban’s systematic policies to suppress women, creating a wave of fear and insecurity among the people of Afghanistan.

The UN Special Rapporteur called on the international community to counter this gender-based persecution by strongly supporting liberated women and girls.

Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice officials arrested dozens of young women from various areas of Dasht-e-Barchi in Kabul on Friday and Saturday, July 18-19.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed concern, stating that the arrest of women in Kabul for not complying with the Taliban’s desired dress code leads to further isolation of women and girls and expands the atmosphere of fear. UNAMA called on the Taliban to repeal policies that restrict women’s freedoms.
