The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced the launch of a £10 million program, funded by the UK, to improve food security and livelihoods in rural Afghanistan, targeting over 151,000 people in eight provinces.

Kokcha News Agency – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has unveiled a new £10 million initiative, funded by the British government, aimed at enhancing food security and livelihoods in rural Afghanistan. The program, titled “Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods,” is designed to help rural communities cope with climate and economic shocks over the next 10 months.

Program Details:
The program will support more than 151,000 people across eight provinces in Afghanistan, with a particular focus on smallholder farmers, livestock herders, landless laborers, and especially female-headed households.

According to a statement released by the FAO on Monday, the project will assist farming families in improving wheat and dairy production, rehabilitating irrigation systems, expanding access to high-quality seeds, and protecting livestock through vaccination and local health services.

Empowering Women:
Women will play a central role in the project, receiving special support packages for widows and female-headed households, including poultry packages, livestock training, and access to dairy markets.

FAO’s Broader Efforts in Afghanistan:
The FAO emphasized the importance of agriculture in Afghanistan, noting that it has supported over 30 million Afghans in this sector from 2022 to 2024.
