IOM Officials Assess Crisis as Nearly 2 Million Afghan Migrants Forcibly Deported from Iran
Senior officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have arrived in Afghanistan to assess the growing humanitarian crisis as nearly two million Afghan migrants have been forcibly deported from Iran in recent months, overwhelming the country’s already fragile infrastructure.

Kokcha News Agency – Senior officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have traveled to Afghanistan to evaluate the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by the forced deportation of nearly two million Afghan migrants from Iran in just the past three months. The visit aims to strengthen emergency response efforts and coordinate with local authorities to address the urgent needs of returnees.
Delegation’s Mission:
Mohammed Abdiker, IOM’s Senior Advisor, and Iori Kato, IOM’s Regional Director, are leading the delegation. Abdiker stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the team is focused on supporting emergency operations and engaging with key stakeholders involved in managing the return of migrants.
Alarming Statistics:
“The number of Afghan returnees from Iran has reached an all-time high,” Abdiker wrote. “But the available resources to respond to this crisis are dwindling rapidly.” The IOM has echoed these concerns, emphasizing the urgent need for increased humanitarian funding and logistical support.
Challenges Faced by Returnees:
Returnees face significant challenges, including lack of shelter, food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to livelihood opportunities. Border regions are particularly strained, with emergency reception centers struggling to meet basic needs.
Afghanistan’s Fragile State:
The mass deportations come at a time when Afghanistan remains in deep economic crisis, compounded by natural disasters, displacement, and limited international recognition of the Taliban administration. Aid groups warn that the country cannot handle this scale of returnees without urgent international assistance.
Call for International Support:
IOM officials have urged donor countries and regional partners to step up support before the situation deteriorates further. Without immediate intervention, the mass return of Afghan migrants risks triggering a wider humanitarian collapse in already vulnerable communities.
