Afghanistan Declares August 19 a Public Holiday for Independence Day

The Afghan government has announced August 19 as a public holiday to commemorate the 106th anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from British rule.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has issued a statement declaring Tuesday, August 19, as a public holiday across Afghanistan in honor of the country’s Independence Day.

According to the announcement, August 19 marks the 106th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence from Britain, which was achieved on August 19, 1919 (28 Asad 1298 in the Afghan calendar). The day is celebrated nationwide as a symbol of the country’s sovereignty and freedom.

Afghanistan gained its independence after a series of conflicts with Britain, culminating in the Treaty of Rawalpindi in 1919. This historic event allowed Afghanistan to establish its own foreign policy and diplomatic relations, free from British control.

Afghanistan gained its independence after three wars with Britain, culminating in the 1919 Treaty of Rawalpindi, which granted the country full sovereignty. King Amanullah Khan, who led Afghanistan during this period, played a pivotal role in establishing independent foreign relations and modernizing the nation.

Despite never being part of the British Empire, Afghanistan faced three Anglo-Afghan wars (1839-1842, 1878-1880, and 1919) before securing its independence. The third war, in 1919, led to Britain relinquishing control over Afghanistan’s foreign affairs, allowing the country to establish its own diplomatic relations with the world.

King Amanullah Khan, who ascended to power in 1919, implemented significant reforms in both domestic and foreign policy. He formalized Afghanistan’s independence and established diplomatic ties with major global powers. However, his reign ended abruptly in 1929, and he was forced into exile.

Today, Afghans across the country celebrate their independence with official ceremonies, family gatherings, and the display of the national flag. Security measures have been heightened in major cities, particularly in Kabul, to ensure the safety of citizens during the celebrations.
