Taliban Crack Down on Women’s Home-Based Beauty Salons After Banning Female-Run Businesses
Following their return to power, the Taliban have not only banned women from working but are now targeting home-based beauty salons, leaving thousands of women without income and forcing them into further economic hardship.
Kokcha News Agency – Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have imposed severe restrictions on women’s employment, shutting down female-run businesses, including beauty salons, which left 60,000 women unemployed.
In response, many women who were the sole breadwinners for their families began offering beauty services from their homes. However, the Taliban are now cracking down on these home-based salons, conducting house-to-house searches to identify and shut them down.
In a video circulating online, a Taliban official from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice can be heard instructing local authorities to identify and report home-based beauty salons. The official warns of consequences for failing to comply with these orders.
This latest move by the Taliban has further exacerbated the economic crisis for women in Afghanistan, particularly for those who were already struggling to make ends meet after the initial ban on female-run businesses.
