France Prepares for Snap Election Amid Government Collapse Threat

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has instructed Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to prepare for the possibility of early general elections should the current government fall.

PARIS (KOKCHANEWS) – French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has instructed Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to prepare for the possibility of early general elections, should the government fall.

The prospect of snap general elections coinciding with municipal elections, scheduled for March 15-22, has emerged in France.

According to a report by public broadcaster Franceinfo, an unnamed source from the ruling party stated that Lecornu ordered Nunez to prepare for a potential general election on the same dates as the municipal elections.

The same source indicated that the National Assembly would be dissolved if the government collapses due to no-confidence motions presented by the opposition.

From the opposition, both the La France Insoumise (LFI) party and the National Rally (RN) party had submitted no-confidence motions against the Lecornu government to the National Assembly.

These no-confidence motions are expected to be put to a vote in the General Assembly of the Parliament next week.

Mathilde Panot, Deputy Head of the LFI Group, argued yesterday that France has been humiliated on the international stage and that both Lecornu and French President Emmanuel Macron should resign from their posts.

France has experienced governmental instability in recent years, with the government of former Prime Minister Michel Barnier falling on December 4, 2024, and the government of former Prime Minister François Bayrou falling on September 8, 2025.
