Iran Protest Death Toll Surpasses 4,000 as HRANA Reports Mass Arrests

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has announced that the death toll from the nationwide protests in Iran, sparked by severe economic instability, has risen to 4,029. Additionally, over 26,000 individuals have reportedly been detained.

According to the latest report by HRANA, the ongoing unrest across Iran has resulted in the detention of 26,015 citizens. The agency confirmed that 4,029 people have lost their lives in the clashes, a figure that includes 180 security personnel. This marks a significant increase from the previous day’s report, which placed the death toll at 3,919.

Timeline of Unrest

The protests began on December 28, 2025, initiated by merchants in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar in response to the rapid devaluation of the local currency and deepening economic woes. The demonstrations quickly spread to numerous cities. Violence escalated significantly on January 8 in the capital, Tehran, prompting the government to implement a near-total internet blackout. Reports indicate that internet access has been partially and limitedly restored in recent days.

Conflicting Narratives

While the intensity of the street demonstrations appears to have subsided, HRANA continues to update casualty and arrest figures as it verifies more cases. Conversely, Iranian officials have yet to release an official total count of civilian deaths. However, they have stated that over 3,700 security personnel have been injured and have announced the arrest of 3,000 individuals they describe as members of terrorist organizations or provocateurs.

Leader’s Admission

On January 17, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the situation, admitting to the high loss of life. He stated that “individuals linked to Israel and the US caused great damage and killed several thousand people” during the protests, effectively acknowledging the scale of the fatalities while attributing the blame to foreign interference.
