Deadly Snow and Rain Grip Afghanistan: 14 Dead, Key Highways Blocked, and Salang Buried Under 4 Meters of Snow
Severe winter weather has claimed at least 14 lives across Afghanistan, collapsing homes and severing vital transport links as authorities struggle to clear massive snow drifts.

KABUL (Kokcha.News) — Heavy snow and torrential rain sweeping across Afghanistan have killed at least 14 people and caused significant infrastructure damage, officials confirmed. A spokesman for the Taliban’s disaster management authority, Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, reported 11 fatalities across the provinces of Kandahar, Parwan, Bamyan, Maidan Wardak, Jawzjan, and Faryab. The storms also damaged nine homes and killed approximately 500 livestock.
Tragedy struck specifically in Kandahar’s Dand district, where authorities confirmed that six children were killed when a roof collapsed under the weight of the storm. Similarly, in Nuristan province, local officials reported the death of three children after a roof caved in following intense rainfall, injuring another woman and child.
Meanwhile, the strategic Salang Pass, a critical artery connecting northern and central Afghanistan, remains closed due to extreme snowfall. Officials stated that snow depth has reached up to four meters in the northern sector and nearly three meters in the south, severely hampering clearance operations. The weather department has issued warnings for further heavy rain, snow, and strong winds in eastern and northeastern provinces in the coming days.
