Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Russia’s Far Eastern region, confirmed Gudkov’s death, stating that he was killed during a Ukrainian strike on a command post in Korenevo, near the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region. Unofficial Russian and Ukrainian military channels had earlier reported that Gudkov was among 11 Russian soldiers killed in the attack.
Gudkov, who was also leading a brigade fighting in Ukraine, is one of the highest-ranking Russian military officials killed since the war began in 2022. Kozhemyako, who had regularly met with Gudkov in previous years, described him as a dedicated officer who continued to personally visit the positions of Russian marines even after being appointed deputy commander of the Navy.
Background:
Gudkov had been awarded for bravery in a military operation against Ukraine but was also accused by Kyiv of committing war crimes. Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed him as deputy commander of the Navy in March 2024, according to the Kremlin’s official website.
