According to the EHI Retail Institute’s latest report, supermarkets, pharmacies, and hardware stores were the primary targets, with €2 billion worth of goods stolen from food markets alone.
Organized crime groups accounted for one-third of customer-related thefts, while employee thefts reached €890 million and supplier-related losses hit €370 million.
Rising living costs, a 6.2% unemployment rate, and increasing housing expenses are fueling the trend. The total cost, including security measures and tax losses, amounts to €7.3 billion, impacting product prices by approximately 1.5%.
