Young Woman Mistakes Stomach Pain for Food Intolerance, Diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel Cancer

Krystal Maeyke, a 39-year-old Australian woman, experienced increasing sharp pains in her lower abdomen in early 2023. Initially attributing the discomfort to a food allergy, Maeyke, who was fit and healthy, didn’t suspect anything serious. “I was in shape, exercised regularly, and ate a balanced diet. It never crossed my mind that it could be something severe,” she said.

However, as the pain intensified, Maeyke was rushed to the hospital. After a series of tests, doctors delivered the devastating news: she had stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer. The cancer had spread from her intestines to her ovaries, liver, and abdominal cavity. “A doctor woke me up at night and said, ‘Krystal, I have bad news… You have cancer.’ When I asked how they knew, the response was, ‘It’s everywhere,’” Maeyke recounted.

Reflecting on her symptoms, Maeyke now realizes they were red flags she ignored. “I felt tired all day but thought it was just part of motherhood. I assumed irregular bowel movements were IBS, and night sweats were due to summer heat. Looking back, these were all warning signs,” she said.

Maeyke’s story highlights a concerning global trend: the rise in cancer cases among young adults. Recent global research shows that bowel cancer rates in individuals under 50 have increased in 27 out of 50 countries. In the UK, the rate among young adults has risen by an average of 3.6% annually, while in the US, it’s around 2%.

While obesity is a known risk factor, the occurrence of cancer in healthy individuals like Maeyke has led experts to consider environmental factors. Exposure to plastics, processed foods, and pollution are being scrutinized as potential contributors.

Experts emphasize the importance of paying attention to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, chronic fatigue, night sweats, and changes in bowel habits. Since bowel cancer may not show symptoms in its early stages, regular check-ups are increasingly crucial.

A new study by Cancer Research UK, analyzing 50 years of data, found a 23% increase in cancer diagnoses among the 20-49 age group. Researchers suggest that modern lifestyles, environmental toxins, and other unknown factors may be driving this rise.
