US Expands Military Presence in Greece: Souda Bay and Alexandroupoli Emerge as Key Locations

According to an analysis reported by the Greek press, the US is ramping up its military presence in Greece, particularly focusing on two key locations: Souda Bay in Crete and the port of Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) in northern Greece.

The move comes as tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran, have subsided following a 12-day conflict and a subsequent ceasefire. The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that as priorities shift in Washington, the US has begun to make greater use of “key facilities” in Greece, including the Souda naval base on Crete and the port of Alexandroupoli.

Souda Bay, described by US personnel as “the best in the Mediterranean,” has served as a logistical and operational hub for warships and aircraft. It played a central role in recent US efforts to bolster Israel’s defense against Iranian ballistic missiles. The Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA) between the US and Greece has long recognized Souda Bay as a critical asset. Recent upgrades have increased its storage capacity and enhanced support for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers deployed for missile defense.

In addition to aircraft and anti-drone systems stationed at Souda, the US has also received support from the Greek Armed Forces, including Patriot missile batteries deployed by the Greek Air Force.

Meanwhile, attention is also turning to Alexandroupoli, which is emerging as a growing logistics hub on NATO’s eastern flank. A US military delegation is expected to visit the port in mid-July to inspect facilities used by US forces, including the port and the nearby Giannoulis military camp.

Alexandroupoli serves as a key entry point for forces and military cargo heading to Bulgaria and Romania. Its strategic importance is further highlighted by its role as a transit corridor for commercial goods and energy, especially for landlocked countries with limited access to the Black Sea.

Strategic Importance of Greece:
The increased US focus on Souda Bay and Alexandroupoli underscores the long-term strategic importance of Greek territory in US defense planning. This comes as the Trump administration signals a shift away from long-standing commitments in Europe and the Middle East. Analysts note growing pressure within the Pentagon to reduce involvement in conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, reflecting a broader strategic pivot toward the Indo-Pacific region amid intensifying US-China competition.

As priorities in Washington evolve, regional powers are being forced to adapt to these changes. The US’s expanding military presence in Greece confirms the country’s role as a key ally in the Mediterranean and beyond.
