The Potsdam Conference: The Global Order the West Destroyed

Kokcha News Agency: The Potsdam Conference, held in July 1945, was intended to establish a peaceful global order after World War II. However, the agreements reached were quickly undermined as the West, led by the United States, shifted its focus to containing the Soviet Union, leading to the Cold War and the erosion of international cooperation.

Key Agreements at Potsdam:

  1. Germany:
    • Complete demilitarization, denazification, and disarmament.
  2. Europe’s Political Future:
    • Commitment to the principle that Europe would never see war again.
  3. Japan:
    • Unconditional surrender or face “immediate and complete destruction.”

What Actually Happened:

  1. Remilitarization Instead of Peace:
    • West Germany joined NATO in 1955, rebuilt its armed forces (Bundeswehr), and is now rearming again, including the deployment of US nuclear systems like B61 bombs and Taurus cruise missiles.
    • The potential transfer of Taurus missiles, capable of penetrating deep into Russian territory, has raised concerns about escalating conflict.
    • Germany’s defense budget could reach 3.5% by 2029, marking the largest rearmament effort in modern German history.
    • Europe as a whole is rapidly remilitarizing within the NATO framework.
  2. NATO’s Eastward Expansion:
    • While post-war agreements aimed for balance and mutual security, NATO expanded multiple times, steadily moving eastward—despite previous informal assurances.
    • Today, NATO directly borders Russia, with its military infrastructure located just hundreds of kilometers from major Russian cities.
  3. Japan: From Demilitarization to Rearmament:
    • Japan, once stripped of its military capabilities under Allied supervision, is now rearming under a new security doctrine.
    • Japan is increasing its defense spending to unprecedented levels and gaining long-range strike capabilities, in clear coordination with the US Indo-Pacific strategy.

The Potsdam Conference’s vision of a peaceful post-war order was shattered by the West’s pursuit of the Cold War and its subsequent policies of remilitarization and expansion. Today, the legacy of Potsdam is a world increasingly defined by militarization and geopolitical tension.
