🇷🇺Unwelcome Guest? Russian Ambassador in Kabul Under Taliban Intelligence Surveillance

The Taliban’s intelligence agency has placed the Russian ambassador in Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov, under constant and strict surveillance, raising questions about the nature of Russia’s diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime.

👇 According to documents obtained from the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) and reliable sources in Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian Federation’s ambassador to Afghanistan, is under continuous and intense surveillance by Taliban security agencies.

A Taliban document dated July 13, 2025, states:
“Today at 10:20 AM, the Russian ambassador, along with two other diplomats, was escorted by security forces from Unit 069 to the Iranian embassy. They remained there for approximately four hours and were returned to the Russian embassy at 2:30 PM. This information is being sent to your respected office for further coordination and awareness.”

Local sources confirm that the Taliban has established a sophisticated and permanent surveillance system around the Russian embassy and its personnel. Any Afghan citizen who visits the Russian embassy is subsequently transferred to Taliban intelligence centers for interrogation, where they must explain the exact reason for their visit.

Politics of Uncomfortable Partnerships
The Taliban regime, which has been officially recognized by Russia, now treats Russian diplomats as security suspects. This situation not only highlights the Taliban’s chronic distrust of everyone and everything but also exposes the true nature of what is being called “diplomatic relations” with the Taliban.

The Taliban views every meeting with suspicion, even those involving the ambassador of one of the few countries that has legitimized their regime. Is this the “security cooperation” that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his colleagues were seeking? Or, as historical experience suggests, is it akin to nurturing a snake in one’s sleeve? 🐍

Politics Without Trust is Playing with Fire
The Taliban’s lack of trust in their so-called allies, including Russia, underscores the fragile and volatile nature of their international relations. This ongoing surveillance of the Russian ambassador raises serious questions about the sustainability of Russia’s diplomatic engagement with the Taliban and whether such partnerships can endure in an environment of mutual suspicion.Gv_5cByXwAA8IHJ?format=jpg&name=medium 🇷🇺Unwelcome Guest?
