Massacre of Intellect in the Land of Knowledge: The Consequences of Expelling University Professors in Afghanistan
Universities, the beacons of enlightenment in the darkest moments of history, are under threat in Afghanistan as professors are expelled for thinking differently, leading to a future overshadowed by ignorance and despair.

Kokcha News Agency: Universities are the torchbearers of knowledge, illuminating the path to the future even in the darkest times.
These institutions are sustained by the fuel of intellect and the wick of thought, guarded by professors who, through their toil, keep the flame of awareness alive in the hearts of generations. When these guardians are exiled and the flames extinguished, what remains is the darkness of ignorance and misguidance.
Today, Afghanistan faces a deep wound—the expulsion of professors who have been victimized by closed and monolithic policies for thinking differently.
This tragedy is not only a blatant betrayal of universities but also an unforgivable crime against the future of a nation. Replacing seasoned professors with inexperienced and unqualified individuals is akin to severing the roots of a tree whose fruits are wisdom and enlightenment.
Universities, by their very nature, are the homes of truth-seeking and the hubs of diverse ideas. Just as roaring rivers merge to create a vibrant sea, varied thoughts converge in universities to form the source of truth. In this environment, intellectual diversity is not a threat but a great blessing for growth and flourishing.
However, when the doors of universities are closed to diverse ideas and free-thinking professors are expelled for questioning, these centers of truth transform into prisons where only the echo of an imposed voice is heard. In such a space, neither questions nor thoughts have the opportunity to flourish.
The Dire Consequences of This Policy
- Scientific Consequences: The expulsion of professors is, in essence, the exile of intellect from society. Academic elites are forced to migrate, and universities are emptied of brilliant minds. Research and innovation, like a bird with broken wings, fall from the sky of Afghan academia.
- Classrooms become lifeless and fruitless gatherings, as newly appointed teachers lack both the experience and the ability to educate the next generation. This situation spells the scientific decline of a nation.
- Social Consequences: The expulsion of professors erects a high wall between the younger generation and the freedom of thought. Students, who should grow with a spirit of inquiry and hope, are instead trapped in an atmosphere of suppression and fear, leading to despair and frustration.
- Society, instead of enlightenment and critical thinking, sinks into the swamp of blind prejudice and ignorance. This process breeds a generation that is obedient and silent—a generation that, at critical moments in history, lacks the ability to question or the courage to change.
- Political and Economic Consequences: Universities without professors are like ships without captains. Afghanistan will sink deeper into the whirlpool of scientific, political, and international isolation. No country or academic institution will be willing to cooperate with a system that kills thought. Moreover, this process erodes public trust in governance.
- A nation that sees its rulers fear knowledge and criticism will never place its faith in them. Economically, the absence of skilled and creative human capital halts the wheels of development and pushes the country to the margins of history.
A Dark Future or a Path to Hope?
A society that wields the sword against its professors is, in reality, stabbing its own future. In the Holy Quran, Allah says: “Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?'” (Quran 39:9). This divine question is a whip to the conscience of any ruler who, instead of protecting the knowledgeable, exiles them for thinking.
The salvation of Afghanistan lies not in extinguishing the lights of knowledge but in safeguarding and supporting its academic elites. Professors must be given the freedom to think and speak boldly, and students must be allowed to question without fear. Only under the shadow of free universities, with competent professors and inquisitive students, can a future brighter than today’s darkness be built.
