UNFPA, with EU Support, Opens Maternal Health Center in Uruzgan

Kokcha News Agency – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), backed by the European Union, has opened a new family health center in Tirin Kot, Uruzgan province. The center, established on Thursday, August 30, is designed to offer critical maternal and child health services, addressing the urgent healthcare needs of women in one of Afghanistan’s most underserved regions.

In a report published on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, UNFPA stated that the newly established center will provide vital health services to over 2,800 women. The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access for women and reduce the risks associated with pregnancy in remote areas of the country.

UNFPA emphasized that many Afghan women, particularly those in rural areas, are deprived of essential healthcare services due to a lack of adequate medical facilities. These limitations have contributed to Afghanistan’s persistently high maternal mortality rates and the difficulty in accessing basic healthcare services.

According to UN findings, long distances to healthcare facilities, a shortage of female doctors and professional midwives, and a lack of proper equipment are among the biggest challenges faced by women in remote areas. The establishment of this center in Uruzgan is an effort to reduce these barriers and provide life-saving primary healthcare services to women and children in one of Afghanistan’s most deprived provinces.
