Global Solidarity as International Community Rallies to Aid Afghan Earthquake Victims

Following the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, countries and organizations worldwide have stepped up to offer aid, with the UK pledging £1 million, India sending tents and food, and the UN allocating $5 million in emergency funds.

Kokcha News Agency: The international community has responded swiftly to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s eastern provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman on Sunday night. The disaster, which has claimed over 800 lives and left thousands injured, has prompted a wave of global solidarity, with countries and organizations offering immediate humanitarian assistance.

The United Kingdom has pledged £1 million in emergency aid, which will be distributed through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Red Cross. The aid will focus on providing essential healthcare services, particularly for women, and other urgent relief efforts. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “The UK remains committed to the people of Afghanistan, and this immediate aid will help our partners deliver vital healthcare and emergency supplies to the hardest-hit areas.”

India has also stepped in, sending 1,000 family tents and 15 tons of food supplies to the affected regions. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar announced that more aid would be dispatched in the coming days, emphasizing India’s solidarity with Afghanistan during this difficult time.

The United Nations has allocated $5 million from its emergency fund to support relief efforts. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the organization is working closely with local authorities to assess the most urgent needs and is preparing a broader emergency appeal for additional funding. The UN has already deployed 20 assessment teams to the affected areas, with five more ready to be dispatched.

Qatar has also pledged immediate assistance, with Mariam bint Ali Al-Misnad, Deputy Minister of International Cooperation, confirming that the Qatari leadership has ordered the delivery of urgent aid to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.

Pakistan, which shares a border with the affected regions, has offered to treat seriously injured victims in Peshawar and has prepared medical teams to assist in the relief efforts. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed solidarity with Afghanistan, stating, “We stand ready to provide all possible support.”

Canada has also expressed readiness to assist, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that the country is prepared to offer humanitarian support through its partners.

Humanitarian organizations like UNICEF and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) have also mobilized resources to provide emergency medical care, shelter, and food to the affected populations. UNICEF has warned that thousands of children are at risk and has prioritized delivering essential supplies, including medical kits, warm clothing, and tents, to the hardest-hit areas.

The earthquake, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, has caused widespread destruction, particularly in the mountainous regions of Kunar, where entire villages have been reduced to rubble. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the challenging terrain and damaged roads have made access difficult.
