The Festering Wound of Kabul Bank: A Tale of Corruption and Impunity

Despite rebranding as "New Kabul Bank," the institution remains a symbol of massive corruption, with hundreds of millions of dollars embezzled. The masterminds behind the scandal have not been punished; some are even protected by the Taliban, freely traveling to Dubai while their assets remain untouched.

According to Kokcha News Agency, the renaming of Kabul Bank to “New Kabul Bank” was an attempt to cleanse its image of corruption. However, the bank’s history is marred by the embezzlement of hundreds of millions of dollars.

The main architects of this scandal have not only escaped punishment but are now living under Taliban protection in Kabul, freely traveling to Dubai, and their assets remain unseized.

Kabul Bank’s story is one of theft on a massive scale. Tens of millions of dollars were stolen from individuals, some of whom died under mysterious circumstances, with their money transferred to black accounts. The bank is also linked to the tragic embezzlement of nearly $200 million intended for the salaries of Afghan National Army soldiers.

After the Taliban takeover, those who tried to reclaim their money were arrested, and the funds were siphoned off by a network of thieves and Taliban-linked mafia using forged documents.

The bank’s unresolved accounts and the hope of suspects that time will erase the memory of their crimes are part of the ongoing saga. However, the story of Kabul Bank goes beyond what the public has heard so far.

The Green Trend Information Unit (Rasa) is now uncovering the true story of Kabul Bank. The main mafia, by sacrificing a few individuals and exploiting the toxic environment of 2015, tried to bury the truth.

But while the truth can be hidden, it cannot be destroyed. History has shown that buried truths eventually resurface, and their essence remains unchanged.

Even the Taliban, in their pursuit of accountability, are now following the same path as the Kabul Bank Liquidation Committee during the Republic era, searching for the “black sheep” in the system.
