Afghan Migrant: “A Pregnant Woman Gave Birth, the Baby Died, No One Helped”

On Thursday, July 4, 2024, an Afghan migrant recently deported from the Al-Ghadir Camp in Zahedan shared a heartbreaking account of the dire conditions in the camp, including the tragic death of a newborn baby due to lack of medical assistance.

In a video recorded after his return to Afghanistan, the migrant described the horrific conditions in the Al-Ghadir Camp. He recounted, “A woman gave birth to her baby right there in the camp. Her condition was very bad. We begged the camp officials to help, but no one paid attention. After five hours, an ambulance arrived. They said it was too late—the baby had already died.”

The migrant, who was deported along with others, emphasized, “The conditions in the camp are unbearable. People were crying from hunger and thirst. We couldn’t bear it anymore, so we returned.”

Local Efforts to Help:
Meanwhile, videos from the camp show Baloch citizens sending bread and water under the camp gates to the detainees. One helper in the video says, “We don’t want money, just take the bread.”

Arrests and Detentions:
According to Hasht-e Subh, many detainees, including some undocumented Baloch citizens, have been arrested in and around Zahedan in recent days and transferred to the camp. Families of some detainees have been unable to visit or get information about their loved ones.

Contradiction with Official Claims:
While the Islamic Republic of Iran has long claimed to support the vulnerable and migrants, the accounts and images from the Al-Ghadir Camp reveal conditions that bear no resemblance to human rights standards or basic humanity.
