In the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes and gunfire have claimed the lives of at least 94 people in Gaza, according to health officials. Among the victims, 45 were killed while trying to access humanitarian aid, raising serious concerns over the safety of civilians during aid distribution efforts.
A significant portion of the fatalities occurred in a temporary camp in southern Gaza, where many displaced families had sought refuge. The camp was reportedly targeted at midnight while the refugees were sleeping. Tragically, 13 members of one family, including at least six children under the age of 12, were killed in the attack.
In another heartbreaking incident, six-year-old Heba Abu Atwi was among eight people killed in an airstrike near a “falafel” shop in central Gaza. Her brother was seen at Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital, sitting next to her body and gently caressing her face.
Additionally, at least 15 people lost their lives in a separate attack on a school in Gaza City that was being used as a shelter for displaced people. These attacks on shelters and civilian spaces highlight the increasingly dangerous environment for those seeking refuge in Gaza.
On Thursday, 45 people were killed during attempts to access food aid, including five individuals who died near distribution centers managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a newly-established organization operating with U.S. support and cooperation from Israel. The situation has become even more dire with 40 additional casualties near vehicles carrying United Nations aid.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli forces fired on crowds attempting to approach food distribution centers, and shooting incidents were also reported near Israeli-controlled military zones, where Palestinians often gather to receive aid convoys from the U.N.
The mounting death toll among civilians, particularly those attempting to access aid, is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. With 45 people killed in a single day during humanitarian efforts, there is an urgent need for international intervention.
