Synagogue Door Set on Fire in Melbourne During Shabbat Dinner

East Melbourne synagogue arson attack: Children were playing metres from flames

Police in Melbourne, Australia, confirmed that the door of a synagogue was deliberately set on fire on Friday evening while around 20 people were inside for Shabbat dinner. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters, and no injuries were reported.

Victoria Police stated that the incident is currently being treated as a “serious criminal act” rather than a terrorist attack. Authorities have released video footage of the suspect and are actively working to identify and apprehend the individual.

Police and Community Response
Zorka Dunstan of Victoria Police described the attack as a “serious and abhorrent crime” but emphasized that it is not being classified as terrorism at this stage. She noted that the suspect’s motives and ideology will be evaluated as the investigation continues.

Danny Segal, the synagogue’s president, called on the Australian community to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community during this time.
