Talks over a proposed ceasefire in Gaza are ongoing as Hamas has submitted its response to the truce and prisoner exchange agreement. The Palestinian group has reportedly made several demands, including the reinstatement of the previous humanitarian aid distribution mechanism, guarantees that Israel will not resume attacks if a permanent ceasefire is not achieved, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas in Gaza.
According to Israeli state television KAN, Hamas is insisting on changes to the agreement in three key areas, which will be discussed during negotiations in Doha, Qatar.
Hamas’ Demands
Hamas is calling for a return to the previous humanitarian aid distribution model led by the United Nations (UN), replacing the current U.S.-Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation model, which has been criticized for its inefficiency and alleged involvement in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
Additionally, Hamas is demanding assurances that Israel will not resume attacks if a permanent ceasefire is not reached during the 60-day negotiation period. This demand stems from Israel’s previous behavior during ceasefire talks and its apparent willingness to restart hostilities.
Finally, Hamas is insisting on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the elimination of buffer zones, which it views as a continuation of occupation.
Israeli Delegation Heads to Doha
Meanwhile, an Israeli delegation has reportedly traveled to Doha, Qatar, to participate in the ceasefire negotiations. The delegation includes Gal Hirsch, Israel’s Coordinator for Prisoners and Missing Persons; Ophir Falk, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign policy advisor; and representatives from the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency) and Mossad (Israel’s foreign intelligence agency).
The delegation had previously left Tel Aviv on a private jet for the talks.
