Kokcha News Agency: The murder trial of dentist James Craig, accused of poisoning his wife Angela Craig, took a dramatic turn when their daughter testified that her father had asked her to create a deepfake video to make it appear as if her mother had ordered the substances that led to her death.
According to the daughter’s testimony, Craig wrote a detailed letter instructing her on how to create the deepfake video. The term “deepfake” refers to digitally manipulated images, videos, or audio recordings that appear real but are actually fake.
In the letter, Craig allegedly wrote, “I love you… I’m sorry I have to ask for your help with this.” The daughter confirmed that the letter was written in her father’s handwriting.
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Deepfake
The daughter testified that Craig provided specific instructions for creating the video, including purchasing a cheap laptop, downloading a special network, and funding the entire process with a prepaid gift card. The video was supposed to appear as if it had been recorded weeks before Angela’s death. Craig also instructed his daughter to save the video on USB drives and tell an investigator that she found it in her mother’s purse. Afterward, she was to destroy the laptop.
Craig reportedly chose his second-oldest daughter for this task because she was the child who most resembled her mother both in character and technological knowledge.
Autopsy Request Denied
The couple’s eldest daughter also testified that after her mother’s death, Craig refused to allow an autopsy, saying, “They don’t need to satisfy their curiosity. I don’t want them messing with her.”
The Poisoning
According to prosecutors, Craig poisoned his wife Angela in March 2023 with a mixture of arsenic, cyanide, and tetrahydrozoline, a substance commonly found in eye drops. After Angela was hospitalized, Craig allegedly gave her a pill filled with cyanide, which ultimately caused her death.
Motive
Craig is accused of killing his wife due to growing financial problems and an affair he was having with another woman. The indictment states that Craig told several people before his wife’s death that she had been having suicidal thoughts.
Context:
The trial has captivated public attention due to the shocking details of the case, including the use of advanced technology like deepfake videos to cover up a crime. The case also highlights the lengths to which some individuals may go to conceal their actions.
