UN Security Council Meets to Discuss Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Kokcha News Agency: The United Nations Security Council met on July 23, 2025, to discuss developments in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the search for a lasting ceasefire.

Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, speaking on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), delivered a comprehensive statement to the Council.

Yıldız began his remarks by stating, “On behalf of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, I am honored to present this statement in my capacity as the chair of the group.”

He highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating, “The people of Gaza are struggling to survive under unbearable and life-threatening conditions, with more innocent lives lost every day. The suffering in Gaza is deepening, children are dying, and the Council must fulfill its duty.”

According to Yıldız’s report, the number of men and women killed by Israel in Gaza has exceeded 58,000, with over 142,000 injured. In East Jerusalem and the West Bank, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed.

War Crimes Allegations
The OIC statement condemned the recent massacres, including the attack on June 30, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of more than 85 people, as war crimes and crimes against humanity. Yıldız stated, “Israeli occupation forces have attacked UNRWA schools, tent camps, medical centers, and journalists, with civilians, including children, ruthlessly targeted. These attacks are war crimes.”

Call for International Action
Yıldız criticized Israel’s continued annexation and displacement of the Palestinian people, urging the Security Council to take immediate action. The OIC noted that Israel’s attacks violate UN Security Council Resolution S/RES/2735. Yıldız described Israel’s actions as a “calculated strategy that deliberately violates fundamental human rights and international law.”

Support for UNRWA
Yıldız emphasized the critical role of UNRWA in the region and called on the international community to provide political and financial support to the agency. He also expressed support for the upcoming UN High-Level Conference on the “Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Issue and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

Other Regional Issues
The OIC statement also addressed Israel’s attacks on Syria, Lebanon, and Iran, as well as the situation in the Golan Heights, citing violations of the 1974 Separation Agreement and UN Resolution 1701. Israel’s efforts to establish two buffer zones in Lebanon were also condemned.

Conclusion and Call for Justice
Yıldız concluded his speech by stating, “The time has come for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.” He reiterated the OIC’s commitment to international law and UN resolutions.
