US Withdraws from Gaza Ceasefire Talks in Qatar, Citing Hamas’ “Unwillingness”

Kokcha News Agency – The United States has pulled out of ceasefire talks in Qatar, accusing Hamas of being unwilling to agree to a truce in Gaza. Steve Witkoff, the US Special Envoy for the Middle East, announced the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the US team in Doha has been recalled for consultations.

Witkoff said, “Following Hamas’ latest response, which clearly demonstrates its unwillingness to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, we have decided to recall our team from Doha for consultations.”

He accused Hamas of failing to coordinate effectively and stated, “We will now evaluate alternative options to bring the hostages home.”

Witkoff emphasized that the US remains committed to achieving lasting peace in Gaza.

Background on Ceasefire Negotiations:

  • US Proposal: US President Donald Trump had previously announced that Israel had agreed to the conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. The proposal was presented to Hamas through mediators Qatar and Egypt.
  • Hamas’ Response: Hamas had reportedly given a positive response to the mediators, expressing readiness to negotiate the implementation of the ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
  • Sticking Points: While significant progress was made in the Doha talks, disagreements persisted, particularly over Israel’s insistence on maintaining its occupation of Gaza’s perimeter.
  • Israeli Plans: Israel has also announced plans to establish a “collection camp” in the southern Gaza city of Rafah to forcibly relocate Palestinians, a move that has further complicated negotiations.

Key Points of Contention:

  1. Hamas’ Demands: Hamas has been pushing for a permanent ceasefire and the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, while Israel has insisted on maintaining its military presence in certain areas.
  2. Prisoner Exchange: The proposed deal included the release of 10 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the return of the bodies of 18 Israeli soldiers.
  3. Israeli Occupation: Israel’s refusal to withdraw from Gaza’s perimeter has been a major obstacle to reaching a comprehensive agreement.

US Next Steps:

The US has stated that it will now explore alternative options to achieve its objectives in Gaza, including securing the release of hostages and ensuring a lasting ceasefire.

The US withdrawal from ceasefire negotiations in Qatar underscores the challenges of achieving peace in Gaza, with Hamas’ demands and Israel’s occupation policies remaining key sticking points. As the US explores alternative options, the prospects for a lasting ceasefire remain uncertain.
