FAO Warns of Severe Heatwave in Afghanistan from June 30 to July 6

The FAO office in Afghanistan has alerted the public to a severe heatwave that will affect the entire country from June 30 to July 6. Forecasts indicate that temperatures will rise 2 to 10 degrees Celsius above normal, creating dangerous conditions for the population.

Najibullah Sadid, an expert in water and climate change, explained that by the second week of July, temperatures in the north and central regions are expected to rise by up to 4°C, in the south by 6°C, and in the northeast (Badakhshan) by 8°C above normal. These extreme temperatures are likely to cause discomfort and increase the risk of heat-related health issues, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

However, by the third week of July, temperatures in the north and west are expected to return to normal or even become cooler. In the eastern provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan, and Khost, seasonal rainfall may help maintain temperatures closer to normal.

Precautions and Recommendations
The United Nations has advised the people of Afghanistan to take precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat. Recommendations include:

  • Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Limiting outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Keeping animals in shaded areas to protect them from the heat.
  • Minimizing outdoor work such as farming and construction during peak heat hours.

Health Risks and Vulnerable Populations
The upcoming heatwave presents serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Adequate hydration and reducing exposure to extreme heat are essential to protect people from potential harm. Local and international humanitarian organizations must work together to provide the necessary support to Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations during this period.
