Europe Battles Extreme Heatwave: Water Restrictions Imposed, Homes and Schools Evacuated
Europe is grappling with an intense heatwave, prompting water restrictions, evacuations, and health warnings across several countries, including Spain, Greece, and Italy. The scorching temperatures have also fueled wildfires, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
Europe is facing a severe heatwave this summer, with Spain, Greece, Italy, France, and Portugal experiencing dangerously high temperatures. The extreme weather has led to health warnings, water restrictions, and the evacuation of homes and schools. Wildfires have also erupted, particularly in Turkey, where over 50,000 people have been evacuated due to forest fires.
Spain Breaks June Temperature Record
In Spain, the heatwave has shattered records, with El Granado in the Huelva province reaching 46°C on Saturday, the highest June temperature ever recorded in the country. Previously, the record was 45.2°C in Seville in 1965.
Greece on High Alert
In Greece, the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued a “yellow alert” (level 3, high risk) for 23 regions, including Athens, Crete, Thessaloniki, and several islands like Lesbos, Chios, and Samos.
Belgium Issues Orange Alert
The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium has issued an “orange alert” for July 1-3, warning that temperatures could exceed 35°C, with some areas reaching 36-37°C. Authorities have urged caution, especially for the elderly, children, and those with heart conditions.
Portugal Hits 46.6°C
In Portugal, the town of Mora, east of Lisbon, recorded a scorching 46.6°C. Meteorologists have issued “extreme risk” warnings for 7 out of 18 regions, with cooler temperatures expected by tomorrow night.
Italy Sees Surge in Hospital Visits
In Italy, 21 out of 27 cities are under a high-temperature alert, with Tuscany experiencing a 20% increase in hospital visits. Authorities have advised people to avoid going outdoors between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
France Faces Unprecedented Heat
In France, 88% of administrative regions are under an orange alert, the second-highest level of heat warning. Ecology Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher called the situation “unprecedented.” Over 200 state schools were partially or fully closed, and businesses have been asked to adjust working hours to protect employees.
Wildfires Ravage Southern Europe
Wildfires have broken out across southern Europe, including France, where a fire in the southwest burned 400 hectares and forced the evacuation of 100 people. In Turkey, forest fires in Izmir, Manisa, and Hatay have destroyed homes and displaced thousands.
Northern Europe Also at Risk
In Germany, the meteorological service warned of increased forest fire risks due to the hot and dry weather. Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C in some areas, prompting water restrictions. In Berlin and Brandenburg, employers have been urged to consider the dangers to workers.
In the UK, temperatures in London and the southeast are expected to hit 34°C, with high humidity making conditions particularly uncomfortable for outdoor workers.
