Israeli Army Offers “Last Chance” to Draft Dodgers

The Israeli army has announced a "last chance" for draft dodgers to return to military service without facing penalties, as the country grapples with a shortage of soldiers.

Kokcha News Agency – The Israeli army has launched a campaign offering draft dodgers a “last chance” to return to military service without facing penalties. According to the army, approximately 14,600 individuals are currently listed as draft dodgers or deserters, many of whom belong to the ultra-Orthodox community.

These individuals include those who have started the conscription process but were not enlisted, as well as those who have ignored their draft notices for an extended period. While all are technically subject to imprisonment for evading military service, penalties have been limited so far.

From today until August 21, these Israelis will be given a five-day window under the “Start Over” initiative to register for military service without the threat of imprisonment. The army will notify them via SMS or through the Meitav conscription unit.

Israel Faces Soldier Shortage
Military officials have stated that many individuals refuse to enlist due to fear of imprisonment and criminal records. Those who register on time and report for duty will be exempt from penalties. However, the army has warned that sanctions against those who fail to comply will be tightened.

The Israeli army has admitted to facing a personnel shortage, currently needing around 12,000 new soldiers, with 7,000 required to serve in combat units.
