Hekmatyar: National Unity is Absent in Afghanistan; Putin is Helping the U.S.
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the Hezb-e-Islami party, has called for a national consensus in Afghanistan, while claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin is aiding the U.S. in the country.

Kokcha News Agency – Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of the Hezb-e-Islami party, on Monday, August 27, took to his official social media account on X (formerly Twitter) to raise questions about the possibility of achieving national unity in Afghanistan. He called for a national pact that would be supported by the majority of the Afghan people.
Hekmatyar wrote, “Can we choose the path of national understanding and agree on a national pact? Can we have a common and inclusive position and approach on all national issues that the overwhelming majority of the nation supports?”
Emphasizing the need to build capacity for national unity, he added, “If we can create this ability within ourselves, we can move towards the light.”
Hekmatyar also pointed to the complex regional and international situation, stating, “Our relations with Pakistan are strained, Iran cannot help us, and in Central Asia, sometimes the Russians and sometimes Pakistan conduct joint military exercises near our borders against terrorism.”
Mention of Trump-Putin Meeting
The Hezb-e-Islami leader also referred to the recent meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, noting that the agenda regarding Afghanistan remains unclear.
Referring to Putin’s comments about “defeating the common enemy,” Hekmatyar asked, “Who was this common enemy, and when were they defeated? Germany or Afghanistan? 77 years ago or 25 years ago?”
Hekmatyar claimed that Ukraine, Gaza, Iran’s nuclear facilities, and Afghanistan are among the most important topics discussed between the U.S. and Russia.
He added, “Afghanistan is the last country where both (the U.S. and Russia) fought against the Mujahideen and the Taliban. After the 20-year U.S. occupation and the withdrawal of Soviet forces, we believe that Putin’s target is Afghanistan.”
Claim of Putin Helping the U.S. in Afghanistan
Citing statements by Donald Trump, Hekmatyar claimed that the U.S. president is granting concessions to Putin in Ukraine, but Putin cannot compensate for these concessions in Gaza and Iran.
He said, “Only in Afghanistan can Putin help the U.S. as he did in the past.” According to Hekmatyar, this assistance will be carried out through “northern neighbors and groups affiliated with Moscow who served the U.S. during the 20-year occupation.”
Hekmatyar made these remarks as the Taliban have banned political parties and movements across Afghanistan. There is no sign of the Taliban’s willingness to engage in national reconciliation or agree on a national pact.
