Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan Near Weekend Disaster Zone

he United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, close to the epicenter of the powerful 6.0-magnitude quake that devastated the region over the weekend. The earlier earthquake, which occurred on Saturday, claimed more than 1,400 lives and left thousands injured, with entire villages reduced to rubble.

The latest tremor has added to the challenges faced by rescue teams and survivors in the region. The affected areas, particularly Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, are already struggling with limited resources, damaged infrastructure, and a lack of international aid.

The Taliban government has been leading rescue efforts, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local capacities. Over the weekend, the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense announced that it had conducted more than 80 helicopter flights to evacuate the injured and deliver medical supplies. However, the lack of international assistance has hampered relief operations, as many countries remain reluctant to engage with the Taliban due to human rights concerns and sanctions.

The UN and other humanitarian organizations have called for urgent aid to the region, warning that the death toll could rise further if survivors do not receive immediate assistance. The UN has allocated $5 million for relief efforts, but aid agencies are facing significant funding shortages, with humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan dropping sharply this year.
