Kokcha News Agency– The Taliban’s Ministry of Guidance, Hajj, and Endowments has issued a statement referring to the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan as a “great divine test.” The ministry urged mosque imams to call on people to engage in “prayer, repentance, patience, worship, and reliance on God” during Friday sermons.
In the statement released on Thursday, September 13, the ministry also asked imams to encourage people to perform “prayers for rain, prayers during earthquakes, and to give charity and aid to the victims.”
The statement described worldly earthquakes as “a reflection of the earthquakes of the hereafter” and noted that “past nations were destroyed by earthquakes because they disobeyed God’s commands.”
The ministry emphasized that “when a earthquake befalls Muslims, they should supplicate to God Almighty, seek His mercy, and pray fervently so that He may show them mercy and remove this calamity from them.” It also advised Muslims to “seek forgiveness and repent” when an earthquake occurs.
Additionally, the statement stressed the importance of patience and resilience during earthquakes, urging Muslims to avoid restlessness and lamentation.
The Taliban also called on people to stand together, hold each other’s hands, assist the earthquake victims, and not withhold any help from them.
Scientists, however, view earthquakes as a natural phenomenon. They believe the Earth is made up of large layers called “tectonic plates” that move slowly. When these plates press against each other and suddenly release energy, the ground shakes, resulting in what we experience as an earthquake.
The Taliban has reported that the earthquake in Kunar has claimed 1,457 lives, injured over 3,000 people, and destroyed thousands of homes.
