Trump Warns Taliban: “Bad Things Will Happen” If Bagram Airbase Is Not Returned to the U.S.

Kokcha News Agency – Donald Trump, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, reiterated his demand for the return of Bagram Airbase, which was the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan until its evacuation in 2021. Trump has repeatedly criticized President Joe Biden for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in U.S. military equipment, including Bagram, falling into Taliban hands.

During a press conference in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump emphasized the strategic importance of Bagram, stating that it is “only an hour away from where China is building its nuclear weapons.” He expressed frustration over the unresolved issue, saying, “We lost it for free. Now we’re trying to get it back.”

Trump also revealed that his administration is in talks with the Taliban to regain control of the base. He told reporters at the White House, “We should never have given it up.” According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials are negotiating with the Taliban to facilitate a limited U.S. military presence at Bagram. Zalmay Khalilzad, a former U.S. envoy, has indicated that the base could be used for counterterrorism operations, but this is contingent on resolving the issue of American hostages held by the Taliban.
