US Lawmakers Propose Bill Allowing Trump to Send B-2 Bombers to Israel for Potential Iran Strike
US lawmakers have introduced a bill that would authorize President Donald Trump to send B-2 stealth bombers and bunker-buster bombs to Israel if Iran is found to be developing nuclear weapons, following recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
According to Fox News, the proposed legislation, introduced by US Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler, aims to bolster Israel’s ability to deter Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The bill would grant Trump the authority to provide Israel with advanced military equipment, including B-2 bombers and bunker-buster bombs, in the event that Iran is determined to be pursuing nuclear weapons.
Representative Josh Gottheimer stated, “Iran can never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon. Iran has killed many Americans, including our service members, and has repeatedly attacked our key democratic ally, Israel. Israel must be able to defend itself against Iran and ensure that Iran cannot rebuild its nuclear capabilities.”
Representative Mike Lawler added, “This bill gives the President the authority to equip Israel with the tools and training it needs to deter Tehran and make the world a safer place.”
The bill stipulates that if such an event occurs, Trump must justify to Congress that the action is vital to US national security. Additionally, the President would need to provide documentation that Israel has no other means to destroy Iran’s underground nuclear infrastructure.
Recent US Strikes on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities
The proposed bill comes in the wake of recent US military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities. On June 22, US forces launched airstrikes using B-2 stealth bombers and bunker-buster bombs, targeting Iran’s nuclear sites. Trump later claimed that the strikes, dubbed “Midnight Hammer,” had “destroyed” Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The Pentagon, however, stated that the attacks had set back Iran’s nuclear weapons program by one to two years.
Background: Escalating Tensions
The US strikes followed Israel’s launch of “Rising Lion” air attacks on Iran on June 13, which prompted immediate retaliation from Tehran. The escalating tensions have raised concerns about a broader conflict in the region.
