Kokcha News Agency: In the midst of ongoing discussions within NATO about easing rules related to downing Russian jets, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg clarified that the alliance should not shoot down Russian aircraft that breach the airspace of member countries.
Instead, he stressed the importance of expelling them from the airspace. This comes as reports surface about Russian jets and drones allegedly entering NATO airspace, claims that the Kremlin has dismissed as baseless.
Meanwhile, the UK’s Daily Telegraph reported that NATO defense chiefs are considering a unified set of guidelines for engaging “enemy” aircraft, with Russian jets carrying missiles over allied airspace being potential targets. NATO defense ministers are set to discuss these plans during a meeting on Wednesday, as Europe claims to face increasing threats from Russian aircraft and drones.
Stoltenberg also confirmed that NATO defense ministers will not discuss the delivery of long-range offensive missiles to Kyiv during today’s meeting, stating that such decisions are bilateral and not on the agenda.
Following the meeting, Stoltenberg expects more announcements from NATO members regarding aid to Ukraine, including in the area of air defense. He highlighted a new program of prioritized requirements for Ukraine, which began in August, with $2 billion already committed by allies.
