According to Pakistani media reports, a total of 350 Afghan students have arrived in Pakistan as part of the initial phase of the prestigious scholarship scheme, overseen by Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC). This effort is part of a broader educational partnership aimed at empowering Afghan youth and fostering regional cooperation.
The first batch includes 50 PhD candidates and 100 Master’s students who are expected to arrive by September and begin their studies at various universities across Pakistan. Additional groups are planned to follow later in the year, with the program aiming to award a total of 4,500 scholarships over three years.
A photo shared by Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission highlights a diverse group of scholarship recipients, including Afghan women students—highlighting the program’s role in providing opportunities for women, especially given the Taliban’s ban on girls’ and women’s access to education in Afghanistan.
Since taking control in Afghanistan, the Taliban have enforced strict bans on female education, shutting girls and women out of schools and universities. This regional scholarship initiative offers a vital glimmer of hope for Afghan students, particularly women, seeking to continue their education despite ongoing restrictions.
