On social media platform X, Khalilzad highlighted that the rise in poppy production in Pakistan is likely linked to the expansion of insurgency and ungoverned territories within the country. He emphasized that this trend could exacerbate security and governance issues if not addressed promptly.
“Earlier, I noted the discovery that poppy production has increased in Pakistan,” Khalilzad wrote. “As elsewhere, it likely is linked to the growth of insurgency, terrorism, and ungoverned spaces in the country, especially in Baluchistan.”
He further warned that if this problem is left unaddressed, it could reinforce existing security challenges and become even larger. Khalilzad, who was deeply involved in diplomatic efforts related to the Afghanistan peace process, has continued to comment on regional developments, especially in South and Central Asia, since leaving his official role.
