Which Countries Might Follow Russia in Recognizing the Taliban Regime in Afghanistan?

Russia was the first country to officially recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan after their return to power in 2021. Now, experts suggest that other regional actors, especially China and Central Asian republics, may also move toward formal recognition based on strategic and security considerations.

Kokcha News Agency reports that following Russia’s recognition of Afghanistan’s Taliban government in July 2025, there is growing speculation about which other nations might officially follow suit. Many countries in the region have maintained close engagement with the Taliban without formal recognition, driven by geopolitical, economic, and security interests.

According to Tenga, deputy director of the Ozefer Research Foundation in Delhi, neighboring countries of Afghanistan are compelled to engage with the Taliban for strategic reasons. Some Central Asian countries, along with China, are considered likely candidates to recognize the Taliban officially, similar to Moscow’s move.

Tenga emphasized that Russia’s recognition is a significant geopolitical step that strengthens Moscow’s influence in Kabul and offers a major diplomatic victory for the Taliban. This recognition could alter regional power dynamics and open the door for broader international engagement with the Taliban regime.

While many countries currently maintain close or cautious relations with the Taliban, formal recognition remains a delicate issue influenced by internal politics, security concerns, and international norms. However, given the recent movements by Russia and the geopolitical shifts in the region, more states may consider moving toward recognition or at least closer diplomatic ties in the near future.
