Iran Moves to Regulate Drone Use Amid Misuse Concerns

Iran’s National Security Commission pushes for stricter drone regulations as reports reveal 50,000-60,000 drones could be misused.

Kokcha News Agency: Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has emphasized the urgent need to regulate the use of drones following reports that approximately 50,000 to 60,000 imported or domestically produced drones are at risk of misuse.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the commission, highlighted the potential dangers of unregulated drone use, comparing it to the misuse of a surgical knife.

Boroujerdi stated that recent incidents have demonstrated how drones can be exploited for harmful purposes, prompting the commission to expedite the drafting of a bill to control drone operations.

He explained that once the bill passes through the Guardian Council and is approved, any misuse of drones will be subject to legal penalties.

The proposed law will require all drones, including micro-aircraft, to be registered and operated only with proper permits.

Boroujerdi acknowledged the legitimate uses of drones, such as agricultural pesticide spraying, but stressed that all operators must be identified to prevent future misuse.

He expressed hope that with stricter regulations, responsible authorities will be better equipped to handle drone-related incidents and prevent the recurrence of past events.
