UN Adopts Resolution on Afghanistan Despite U.S. Opposition
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the Afghan government to eliminate terrorist groups and reverse the "increasingly severe oppression" of women, despite objections from the U.S.
Kokcha News Agency: The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has adopted a resolution urging the Afghan government to take active measures to eliminate terrorist groups and reverse the “increasingly severe oppression” of women.
The 11-page resolution, titled “The Situation in Afghanistan,” was presented by Germany, Ireland, and Switzerland and received support from 116 countries, while the U.S. and Israel voted against it. Twelve countries, including Russia, China, India, and Iran, abstained from the vote.
The adopted resolution calls on the Kabul government to “take active measures to combat, dismantle, and eliminate all terrorist groups without discrimination” and to “swiftly abandon policies that have caused serious concern due to the severe, worsening, widespread, and systematic oppression of all women and girls.”
The resolution also emphasized the importance of “creating opportunities for economic recovery, development, and prosperity” in Afghanistan and highlighted the need to increase donor support for the country. It also expressed gratitude to foreign countries, including Iran and Pakistan, which host Afghan refugees, and noted improvements in Afghanistan’s overall security situation.
The non-binding resolution reflects the international community’s stance on the situation in Afghanistan.
