Kokcha News Agency: Liz Evenson, Director of International Justice at Human Rights Watch, has praised the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the group’s chief justice, for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity in Afghanistan.
In a statement released on Tuesday, July 17, Evenson stated that this move could pave the way for victims and their families to achieve justice. She emphasized that senior Taliban leaders are now under investigation for their persecution of women, girls, and individuals with diverse gender identities.
Evenson called on the international community to support the ICC in its critical work in Afghanistan and globally.
Recently, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Akhundzada and Haqqani for their alleged commission of “crimes against humanity” in Afghanistan.
In response to the ICC’s decision, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, stated that the group does not recognize the ICC and will not comply with its rulings.
