Kokcha News Agency: The United States has deployed an advanced fleet of F-16 fighter jets to South Korea to enhance military preparedness on the Korean Peninsula amid ongoing tensions with North Korea. According to the U.S. Air Force’s 51st Fighter Wing, the upgraded F-16s were transferred from Misawa Air Base in Japan and arrived at Osan Air Base on June 26-27.
The F-16s, equipped with advanced systems, are noted for their capabilities, which are approaching those of fifth-generation fighter jets. This upgrade significantly improves both survivability and the precision of weapon systems.
“Super F-16 Fleet”
Last summer, U.S. forces established the first “super F-16 fleet” at Osan Air Base. Plans are underway to form a second super fleet at the same base by October. Each fleet will consist of 31 fighter jets, aimed at increasing military readiness and combat capabilities on the Korean Peninsula.
U.S. Military Presence in South Korea
Currently, the U.S. maintains a presence of over 28,500 troops in South Korea. North and South Korea remain technically at war, as only an armistice, not a peace treaty, was signed in 1953 to end the Korean War. The F-16s are multirole fourth-generation fighter jets actively used by both the U.S. and South Korea.
Strengthening Indo-Pacific Cooperation
The transfer of F-16s to South Korea is intended not only to bolster defense in South Korea but also to enhance coordination with U.S. air forces in Japan. This move aims to strengthen combined air power in the Indo-Pacific region, enabling a faster and more effective response to potential threats.
According to a Pentagon statement last year, 36 F-16s at Misawa will eventually be replaced by 48 advanced F-35A fighter jets. However, it remains unclear how many F-16s have been transferred to South Korea or whether additional aircraft will be sent to Osan Air Base.
The U.S. Air Force emphasized that efforts to modernize the fleet will continue to stay ahead of “evolving threats” and maintain air superiority.
