Kokcha News Agency reports that the massacre in Srebrenica, where 8,372 Bosniak civilians lost their lives, remains a tragic symbol of humanity’s failure to prevent ethnic genocide in Europe. This atrocity, the deadliest in Europe since World War II, occurred during the Bosnian War, when UN-claimed safe zone turned into a scene of mass murder under the command of Bosnian Serb leader Ratko Mladic.
The massacre took place over five days in July 1995, as Bosniak men and boys aged 12 and above were systematically rounded up, transported in buses, and executed. The bodies were later dumped into mass graves, some of which have been uncovered by forensic teams after years of excavations. Today, more than 5,600 victims have been identified, but thousands of others remain missing.
International courts have recognized and condemned the Srebrenica genocide. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague sentenced Ratko Mladic to life imprisonment and Radovan Karadzic to 40 years for their roles. A total of 45 Serb nationals have received over 700-year combined sentences for crimes related to the genocide.
The day is symbolized by the Srebrenica Flower, represented by a flower with 11 white petals (signifying the date, July 11) surrounding green leaves symbolizing hope for justice. The white petals also symbolize innocence and purity, while the green reflects the hope that justice and reconciliation will someday prevail.
Despite the international tribunal’s efforts and recognition, global political and civil society silence or inaction continue to haunt the memory of Srebrenica. Many survivors and relatives of victims still call for justice, recognition, and efforts to ensure such atrocities never happen again.
In remembrance, TRT’s digital platform “Tabii” produced a series titled “Dayton,” depicting the struggles of Bosniaks trying to rebuild their shattered country and honor their fallen loved ones, emphasizing that the fight for justice and peace persists.
