Iran Seizes Foreign Tanker in Gulf of Oman

Kokcha News Agency reports: Iranian officials have intercepted and seized a foreign tanker in the Gulf of Oman, escalating tensions in the strategically important waterway. The semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that the vessel was carrying 2 million liters of fuel when it was detained by Iranian authorities.

Mojtaba Ghahremani, the chief justice of Hormozgan province, stated that the seizure was a result of continuous monitoring of suspicious fuel smuggling activities in the Gulf of Oman. He explained that officials inspected the foreign tanker due to a lack of proper documentation for its cargo and subsequently seized it for carrying 2 million liters of smuggled fuel.

Ghahremani also confirmed that 17 crew members were arrested, and legal proceedings have been initiated. However, no information was provided regarding the name of the tanker or its flag state.

Iran, which has some of the world’s lowest fuel prices due to heavy subsidies and the depreciation of its national currency, has been battling fuel smuggling to neighboring countries by land and to Gulf Arab states by sea.

The chief justice emphasized that fuel smugglers attempting to plunder national wealth in coordination with foreigners will not escape justice. He warned that if their crimes are proven, the perpetrators will be punished without leniency.
