U.S. Declares Economic War on BRICS Nations: Will Global South Surrender?

The U.S. threatens BRICS countries with tariffs, but experts believe the bloc, representing 40% of the global economy, will not bow to pressure and will continue trading with Russia.

Kokcha News Agency: The United States has escalated its economic war against BRICS nations, threatening to impose secondary tariffs of 100% to 500% on member countries if they continue trading with Russia.

However, experts argue that these threats are unlikely to deter the BRICS bloc, which represents at least 40% of the global economy.

Dr. John Gong, a professor of international trade and economics at Beijing University of Business and Economics, told Sputnik that he does not believe BRICS countries will be intimidated into cutting ties with Russia.

The proposed sanctions, part of the 2025 Russia Sanctions Act, have not yet been passed into law by the U.S. Congress or even approved by the Senate. Gong described the move as “ultimately an empty threat.”

Russia has been strengthening its cooperation with BRICS nations and other Global South countries, which together form a significant portion of the global economy.

If the U.S. attempts to restrict Russian energy, fertilizers, food, metals, or minerals in the global market, there are no viable alternatives.

This could lead to a sharp increase in oil prices, especially since China and India are the largest buyers of Russian oil. If the U.S. blocks their purchases, global oil prices could skyrocket, and neither China nor India is willing to pay inflated prices for these commodities.

The question remains: Is the U.S. prepared to withstand the economic backlash from its actions?
