7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Alaska Peninsula, Tsunami Warning Issued
A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula, prompting a tsunami warning for a large portion of the region, including the southern tip of the mainland and extending toward Anchorage.
Kokcha News Agency: A significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula, near Popof Island, close to Sand Point, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake, which struck around 12:30 local time, has led the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to issue a tsunami warning for a large area of the Alaska Peninsula and the southern tip of the mainland, extending toward Anchorage.
Michigan Technological University classifies earthquakes between 7.0 and 7.9 as capable of causing “serious damage,” with such large quakes occurring only 10-15 times per year.
Authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to remain cautious and follow official warnings.
