Kokcha News Agency – In a briefing to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk highlighted the dire conditions in Sudan’s Darfur region, particularly in El Fasher, where thousands of civilians have been killed this year amid escalating violence.
Turk condemned both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces for their “utter disregard” for international humanitarian law. He emphasized that the people of El Fasher are enduring constant bombardment, with severe shortages of food, water, and medicine.
“After more than a year under RSF siege, the situation in El Fasher is catastrophic,” Turk said. “The scale of the suffering of the Sudanese people across this vast country is unfathomable, demanding the full attention of the world.”
Sexual Violence and Atrocities
Turk also raised concerns about widespread sexual violence, primarily targeting displaced women and girls. He warned that there are no safe routes out of the city, and the risk of further atrocities and ethnically motivated violence remains high.
“I have repeatedly raised the risk of further atrocities and ethnically motivated violence,” Turk said, urging the international community to take decisive action to halt atrocity crimes.
Call for International Action
Turk called on all states to respect the UN arms embargo, press the warring parties to protect civilians, ensure unhindered humanitarian access, and push for a ceasefire that would pave the way for civilian rule.
