Iran Supports Regional Relations but Stresses Sovereignty in the Caucasus

Kokcha News Agency: Ismail Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterated Iran’s clear and transparent stance on regional connectivity, transit routes, and information sharing in the Caucasus region.

Speaking on Iran’s position, Baqaei emphasized that while Iran supports the expansion of regional relations, particularly with countries in the South Caucasus, any new transit routes must not compromise sovereignty, territorial integrity, or internationally recognized borders.

Baqaei stated:
🔹 “The Islamic Republic of Iran’s positions on information, transit routes, and passages in the Caucasus region are completely clear and transparent.”
🔹 “While we support and agree with the expansion of interactions and the development of relations among regional countries, especially between Iran and the countries of the South Caucasus, we have always emphasized that the creation of new transit routes and passages must not in any way undermine sovereignty, territorial integrity, or internationally recognized borders, nor should it alter the region’s geopolitics.”

Addressing Misinterpretations in Media

Baqaei also addressed potential misinterpretations of statements made by officials from other countries regarding the Caucasus, noting that such remarks may not always be accurately reflected in Iranian media, leading to misunderstandings.

Iran’s Role in Regional Connectivity

Iran has consistently advocated for regional cooperation and connectivity, particularly in the Caucasus, a strategically important area for trade and transit. However, Tehran has always stressed the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in any regional development projects.
